Event Introduction

Ruta de los Arrieros follows the ancient mule trails once used to transport gold through Colombia’s rugged landscapes. This expedition run traces the footsteps of the arrieros – legendary muleteers who forged these paths – offering a journey steeped in history, challenge, and breathtaking scenery.

Expedition Runs aren’t just ultra-endurance trips – they’re immersive journeys designed for ultra-runners, fast-packers, and thru-hikers who crave both the thrill of endurance and a deep connection to the landscapes and cultures they traverse.

Unlike races, our Expedition Runs are curated experiences for those looking to step away from chasing PRs and instead be fully present – body and mind – in the environment they’re crossing. Along the route, participants will dive into the history of the region, experience local culture, savor traditional cuisine, and rest in small, historic towns.

We call it The Expedition Run because it’s more than just running or hiking. The terrain can be rugged, river crossings may leave your feet soaked, and dense vegetation might slow your stride. Included are optional challenges like rappelling beside a waterfall or swimming between islands that add an extra layer of adventure for those who seek it.

Colombia, Antioquia, Guatapé

Welcome to the untamed heart of Colombia’s Antioquia region — a land where history, raw nature, and uncharted paths converge to create an unparalleled adventure. Your journey will begin in a picturesque place deeply rooted in the country’s railway history and surrounded by lush, rolling hills. From there, you’ll chart a course through breathtaking valleys, dense forests alive with the calls of exotic birds, and pristine waterways cutting through dramatic landscapes.

This region is a treasure trove of discovery, where every twist and turn reveals hidden wonders known only to the locals who have called this land home for centuries. The journey culminates in an awe-inspiring location, offering panoramic views of towering rock formations, vibrant villages, and tranquil lakes with thousands of islands.

Antioquia is more than breathtaking landscapes; it’s the heart of Paisa culture, renowned for its warmth, resilience, and unshakable pride. The Paisa people are deeply connected to their land and heritage, blending traditional values with a welcoming spirit. Their vibrant traditions are reflected in everything from their colorful architecture to their world-famous coffee.

As you traverse this region, you’ll feel the pulse of Paisa culture, a culture of hard work, celebration, and an unwavering connection to the natural beauty that surrounds them. This adventure isn’t just about exploring landscapes; it’s an opportunity to connect with the heart and soul of Antioquia.

At Terra Venture, we believe that the thrill of the unknown is what makes the journey unforgettable. You will navigate secret routes and take on experiences designed to immerse yourselves in the culture or push your limits while showcasing the region’s most spectacular and secluded spots.

ROUTE

The Expedition Run is a 3 day stage run or fastpack event punctuated with unique experiences along the route. Travel time ranges from 5–8 hours to 10–12 hours, depending on the stage.

STAGE #1 – Your journey begins with a surprise before climbing from Colombia’s historic railway region into higher elevations, following the pristine Río Nus, home to the famous historic trapiches. The lively town of Santo Domingo hosts dinner and simple accommodations.

STAGE #2 – An early start takes you along one of the region’s oldest mule trails. Ridges, meadows, rivers, and the historic Purgatorio Bridge, once a key gold transport route, lead to Alejandría’s iconic square. Rolling hills then guide you to Caza Diana on Guatapé Lake. This is the longest stage and slower participants may finish after dark so there will be optional group travel available.

STAGE #3 – A boat ride across Guatapé Lake sets the stage for a diverse final stretch – expansive lake views, remote trails, waterfalls, a rappel (or avoided with an alternative trail), and two short swims (or avoid by kayak crossings). The finish line can be found at an eco-boutique hotel, where fresh food and drinks await.
